Hello/High-Low
After a long break from posting, due in part to a holiday induced sugar coma, I’m back at school and happy to resume writing here. I am a whopping two days into my second semester at Drake University and today the temperature in Des Moines has dipped into the single digits. This is precisely the kind of weather that makes me want to roll myself up in a down blanket, turn off the lights and hibernate. So naturally, between classes I find myself dreaming of spring and perusing the internet for all the new clothing I’ll require when mother nature once again decides to be more generous.
At the top of my “must snag” list this season are the high-low skirts popping up in stores and on runways everywhere. I find the funky hem really playful and I like that it offers a little more coverage than the ultra-mini skirts of seasons past (they’re so 2010). I’ve also heard of them referred to as mullet skirts, only they’re more party in the front and business in the back, the precise opposite of the achey-breaky hair-mistakey of the 1980’s.
There are sure to be some fashion skeptics who fail to see the beauty of this impending trend as it certainly does conjure memories of the horrid, witch-like assymmetrical skirts of my elementary school days, but I’m confident this statement skirt will make its mark on S/S 2012. I’ll probably snatch these up wherever I can find them and might even start building my collection now as I have no qualms about pairing them with tights and booties until the seasons change.

My Christmas List (as dictated by the December ELLE)
These new multi-dimensional top coats from Essie tug at my heart strings because they’re glittery. I’m especially aching for the silver one aptly named Set in Stones. I’ve been achieving a similar effect for years with glitter glue but I’ve got a feeling my nails would appreciate these polishes over Crayola-grade adhesive any day.

Wordsmith Lou Beach crafted this book of short stories with a single qualification: each is limited to only 420 characters. That’s a mere 3 tweets! I’ve never been good at being concise so I find this idea particularly intriguing.

This Valentino frock, fresh off the Resort ‘12 runway. It’s not asking too much.

The Kate Spade “Sparkler Missy” bag. It’s practically named after me.

My friends used to give me grief about my love affair with “fur.” Joke’s on them; it’s everywhere lately. This vest is just perfect and it would totally help me channel Rachel Zoe. BA-NA-NAS.

I received a peculiar letter in my mailbox two weeks ago. To be clear everyone in Herriott Hall got it, I’m not special or anything. Anyways, it was an acceptance letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Naturally I was pretty stoked to finally realize my dream of attending the prestigious school of magic. I’ve already got my wand (yew 12.5 inches, dragon heartstring) and been sorted into Hufflepuff. Personally I always thought I’d fit best into Gryffindor or Ravenclaw but I have no problem repping the black ‘n yellow, it was home to Cedric Diggory and Nymphadora Tonks after all. This next month is sure to be full of magic and shenanigans. I’m talking butter beer and potion making.

I’ve never had particularly good study habits but I think I could be inspired to hit the books harder if I had access to libraries like these.

This library at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland is a feast for the eyes but I’m fairly sure I’d be more likely to investigate conspiracies and hunt for treasure Benjamin Gates style than get work done in this environment.

This library is housed in the Iowa Capitol building a few short miles from me. I’ll definitely have to check it out at some point during my time here in Des Moines. It looks pretty sweet but something tells me it doesn’t have a Starbucks inside so for the time being I’ll stick to Cowles.

This reading room is in Amsterdam which is puzzling because I swear I had a nightmare take place here…I’ve definitely never been to Amsterdam.
